Hey There

Roots & Tendrils was built from a belief that plants thrive best when we understand why they grow the way they do — not just how to keep them alive.

This business exists at the intersection of plant science, education, and sustainability. Every plant, care guide, and decision is shaped by that foundation.

About Roots & Tendrils

A Science-Based Approach to Plants

My name is Brady Boyer. I hold a Master’s degree in Ecology and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and I currently teach high school biology and environmental science. Outside of Roots & Tendrils, my work centers on education, research, and public outreach — helping people understand complex ecological systems in practical, approachable ways.

That same mindset guides everything here. Plant care doesn’t need to be mysterious, trend-driven, or overly simplified. When you understand how light, water, soil, and roots actually function together, plant care becomes predictable, forgiving, and deeply rewarding.

I started this small business with the belief that plants connect us to nature, to patience, and to each other. My hope is that owning houseplants—or learning more about how to care for them—will invite curiosity, stewardship, and a deeper relationship with nature.

Grown Slowly, Grown Responsibly

Every plant offered through Roots & Tendrils is propagated from my personal collection. This allows me to grow plants slowly, observe their long-term behavior, and ensure they are well-established before reaching a new home.

Propagation-first growing reduces pressure on wild populations and avoids the high environmental cost of large-scale imports. It also means each plant has already adapted to indoor conditions, making it more resilient and easier to care for long-term.

Thoughtful Choices, Not Perfect Ones

Sustainability is not about perfection, it’s about intentional trade-offs.

Where possible, Roots & Tendrils avoids materials with high ecological cost. Soil mixes rely on peat-free alternatives like coco coir, and mineral components like perlite and bark, rather than sphagnum moss. Packaging is kept minimal, and growing practices prioritize longevity over rapid turnover. To the utmost of our ability, we prioritize responsible sourcing and carbon neutrality. We will never sell a plant that is known to be invasive in the United States! (Sorry, English Ivy)

These choices are guided by ecological impact, durability, and long-term plant health, not aesthetics or trends.

Giving Back to the Systems That Support Us

Plants don’t exist in isolation, and neither should businesses built around them.

Roots & Tendrils is a proud contributor through 1% for the Planet, donating a portion of all sales to environmental organizations working to restore and protect ecosystems. Contributions support groups such as One Tree Planted, helping fund reforestation and habitat restoration efforts worldwide.

Therefore, buying your houseplant from us will aid in planting trees elsewhere. Supporting plants in homes should also support ecosystems beyond them.
